      The process whereby green plants manufacture carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water, using the light energy from sunlight trapped by the pigment chlorophyll in specialized structures known as chloroplasts.
    2. A similar process that occurs in certain bacteria, whereby carbohydrates are manufactured using a hydrogen source other than water.
