      In taxonomy: any of the major groups, eg Chordata (the vertebrates), into which the animal kingdom (sense 2) is divided and which in turn is subdivided into one or more classes (sense 9). It corresponds to the division (sense 7) in the plant kingdom. See also phyletic.
