    1. A variety of sweet pepper, native to tropical America, widely cultivated for its mild-flavoured red fruit.
    2. The fruit of this plant, eaten raw in salads, cooked and eaten as a vegetable, or used as a relish, a stuffing for olives, etc.
Etymology: 19c: Spanish, meaning ‘paprika', from Latin pigmenta spiced drink, spice or pepper.
