    1. A stone basin with a drain, found in older churches, in which to empty water used for rinsing the sacred vessels, generally situated in a niche on the south side of the altar.
Etymology: 18c in this sense; 16c meaning ‘fish pond', from Latin, meaning ‘basin', ‘tank' or ‘fish pond'.
