      The occurrence of a living organism in two or more different structural forms at different stages of its life cycle.
    2. genetics.
      The occurrence of several genetically determined and distinct forms within a single population, eg the different blood groups in humans.
    3. chem.
      The occurrence of a chemical substance in two or more different crystalline forms, eg diamond and graphite. Also called allotropy.
