noun
    1. A traditional French dish made by slowly cooking various cuts of meat together with vegetables, eg carrots, leeks, onions, turnips, etc, and herbs in a large heavy pot. The meat is then usually removed and eaten separately and the vegetables and stock are served as soup.
Etymology: 18c: French, literally ‘pot on the fire'.
