    1. A simple mechanism for lifting and lowering weights, consisting of a wheel with a grooved rim over which a rope or belt runs.
    2. A clothes-drying frame suspended by ropes from the ceiling, lowered and raised by means of such a device.
Etymology: 14c: from French polie, ultimately from Greek polos axis.
