      A common colourless mineral that is often tinged with impurities that give a wide variety of shades making it suitable as a gemstone, eg purple (amethyst), brown (cairngorm), pink (rose quartz), etc. In its pure form, it consists of silica or silicon dioxide. See also quartzite.
