    1. A system for detecting the presence of distant objects, or determining one's own position, by transmitting short pulses of high-frequency radio waves from a rotating aerial, and detecting the signals reflected back from the surface of any object in their path.
    2. The equipment for sending out and receiving such radio waves.
Etymology: 1940s: from radio detecting and ranging.
