- 1. An energy source made by separating combustible material (refuse) from solid waste, and then mixing it with coal (1:1 ratio) or burning it in a specially-designed furnace.
2. The product of small-scale fermentation of domestic and animal waste to produce gas (methane) for domestic use. Also (in both senses) called waste-derived fuel.
