noun
    (French)
    romans-fleuves
    1. /) a series of novels, each of which exists as a separate novel in its own right, but which are linked, usually because some or all of the characters appear in each successive work, eg the seven parts of Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu (1913‐27) or John Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga (1906‐28).
Etymology: 20c: French, literally ‘river novel'.
