    1. Any of numerous rod-shaped bacteria found in the intestines of humans and animals, including many species associated with food poisoning, gastroenteritis, typhoid, etc.
      Form: Salmonella
    2. Food poisoning caused by such bacteria, characterized by violent diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
Etymology: Early 20c: named after Daniel E Salmon (1850‐1914), US veterinary surgeon.
