    1. The pleasure, especially sexual, gained by inflicting pain on others.
      Thesaurus: barbarity, cruelty, perversion, malice.
    2. Any infliction of suffering on others for one's own satisfaction. Compare masochism.
Etymology: 19c: named after Comte (called Marquis) de Sade (1740‐1814), the French novelist who died insane, and who notoriously depicted this form of pleasure in his novels.
