    1. Any of numerous small amphibians found in damp regions or in water, superficially resembling a lizard, but with a rounded head, moist skin without scales, and toes without claws.
    2. A mythical reptile or spirit believed to live in fire and be able to quench it with the chill of its body.
    3. A hot metal plate for browning meat, etc.
Etymology: 14c: from French salamandre, from Greek salamandra.
