      Any of a series of manned Earth-orbiting Soviet space stations, the first of which was launched in April 1971, the last in April 1982, which have demonstrated that astronauts can remain in orbit for periods of six months or more.
Etymology: 1970s: Russian, meaning ‘salute'.
