    1. Either of two species of massive evergreen trees, native to N America, the Californian redwood (the tallest known tree) and the giant sequoia (the largest known tree). Also called Wellingtonia.
Etymology: 19c: named after Sequoiah (d.1843) the Cherokee scholar.
