    1. Any of a group of hard glassy crystalline minerals of various colours, that contain oxides of magnesium, aluminium, iron, zinc or manganese and which are used as gemstones.
Etymology: 16c: from French espinelle, from Latin spina thorn, because of the shape of the crystals.
