    1. Any of a group of non-rigid spiral-shaped bacteria, many of which feed on dead organic matter, although some are parasitic and live in the intestines and genital regions of animals, causing various diseases, including syphilis in humans.
Etymology: Late 19c: from Greek speira a coil + chaite long hair.
