Any of about 350 species of marine mollusc, related to the octopus and cuttlefish, which have a torpedo-shaped body supported by an internal horny plate, two well-developed eyes, eight sucker-bearing arms and two longer tentacles which they use to seize fish. Some are capable of changing colour to match their surroundings, and of emitting a cloud of dark ink when threatened by predators.
