      One of many tiny pores that are found on the stems and leaves of vascular plants, each of which have two guard cells for the control and regulation of their functions, and which are the sites where water loss from the plant and gaseous exchange between plant tissue and the atmosphere take place;
    1b. biol.
      Any small opening or pore in the surface of a living organism.
    2. surgery.
      An artificial opening, especially one, such as a colostomy or an ileostomy, that is made for the excretion of waste matter which cannot be evacuated from the body in the normal way.
