    1. Any of various species of large wading bird that are mostly found near water in warm regions of the world, which have long legs, a long bill and neck, and usually loose black and white plumage and which is related to the heron and ibis.
    2. A bird of this kind which is whimsically thought of as carrying a newborn baby suspended in a blanket from its bill and which is used euphemistically for the delivery of a baby.
