    1. grammar.
      A word-forming element that can be added to the end of a word or to the base form of a word, eg as a grammatical inflection such as -ed or -s in walked and monkeys or in the formation of derivatives, such as -less and -ly in helpless and lovely. Compare affix, infix, prefix.
    2. math.
      An index that is placed below the other figures in an equation, etc, eg the n in xn. Also called subscript.
