    1. A vast stellar explosion which takes a few days to complete and which results in the star becoming temporarily millions of times brighter than it was. It has two possible causes, one being a core implosion in a neutron star or black hole at the end of its life and the other originating from white dwarf components of paired stars.
    2. A star that undergoes an explosion of either type.
