      A Hindu custom that was abolished by the British authorities in India in 1829, in which a widow would sacrifice herself by being burned alive on her dead husband's funeral pyre.
    2. A Hindu woman who sacrificed herself in this way.
Etymology: 18c: from Sanskrit sati faithful wife, from sat good, wise, honest.
