verb tamped, tamping
    1. To fill up (a hole containing explosive) with earth or cement, etc before setting off the explosion.
    2. To drive or force down (eg ballast on a railway) by repeated blows.
    3. To pack (tobacco in a pipe or cigarette) into a tighter mass by tapping it or pushing it with a tamper2 (sense 2) or a finger, etc.
      Form: tamp something down (also)
Etymology: 19c: probably from tampin, an obsolete variant of tampion.
