    1. An emergency device that usually consists of a broad strip of cloth, etc which is wrapped around a limb and a bar which is then turned in the cloth to tighten it so that the flow of blood through an artery may be stopped (maximally for half an hour).
Etymology: 17c: French, from tourner to turn.
