    1. medicine.
      A contagious eye disease, common in the Third World, which is transmitted by flies carrying bacteria of the Chlamydia family. The main symptoms are inflammation and scarring of the conjunctiva, redness and pain and, if left untreated, the disease may spread to the cornea and cause blindness.
Etymology: 17c: Greek, meaning ‘roughness'.
