noun
    1. A large sling-like machine used during sieges in the Middle Ages, consisting of a counterpoised spar with a very heavy weight at one end and a spoon-shaped receptacle for missiles (such as stones) at the other; the missile end would be pulled down almost to ground level and then released, so firing the missiles up and forward.
    2. A small accurate balance used for weighing light objects.
Etymology: 13c: French, meaning ‘a siege engine or bird-trap'.
