    1. A picture or carving that covers three panels joined together by hinges to form a single work of art, often used as an altarpiece. See also diptych.
    2. A set of three writing tablets joined together by hinges or ties.
Etymology: 18c: from Greek triptychos consisting of three layers, and modelled on ‘diptych'.
