tweed
noun
    1. A thick roughish woollen cloth, usually with coloured flecks, used for making suits, jackets, skirts, etc and often identified with the town, area, etc where it is produced.
      Example: Harris tweed
    2. Clothes, eg a suit, that are made of this material.
      Form: tweeds
Etymology: 19c: originally a trade name which was a misreading of Scots tweel meaning ‘twill' and which became reinforced by the name of the River Tweed in the Borders along which many of the factories that first produced the cloth were situated.
