    1. A large juicy citrus fruit with a thick wrinkled yellow-red skin, that is a cross between a grapefruit, a Seville orange and a tangerine. It is either eaten fresh or used in jams or preserves to give a sweet-sour flavour.
    2. The plant that produces this fruit, native to the W Indies.
Etymology: 1930s: from ugly, because of the fruit's appearance.
