    1. Any speech-sound made with an open mouth and no contact between mouth, lips, teeth or tongue.
    2. A letter of the alphabet, used alone or in combination, representing such a sound, in English, eg a, e, i, o, u, ai, oa and in some words y. Compare consonant.
Etymology: 14c: from French vouel, from Latin vocalis vocal, from vox voice.
